- **Primary keywords:** average home cost by state; home values by state; typical home price map; ZHVI

## Summary

Interactive **US choropleth map** of typical home values for all 50 states plus DC. Values come from the **Zillow Home Value Index (ZHVI)** for mid-tier homes (single-family and condo), smoothed and seasonally adjusted, stored in FinanceFlow’s database and **refreshed about once a month**. Users can search a state, view rank and range vs the national median, and open related mortgage calculators.

## What the numbers mean

- **ZHVI** estimates a *typical* home value for the housing stock—not the asking price of a specific listing and not the same as median *sale* price (which only reflects homes that sold recently).
- State-level figures support broad comparison. Local metros and neighborhoods can differ a lot from the state typical value.
- Use the map for orientation, then run purchase, affordability, or rent vs buy with a price closer to the home you care about.

## Features

- Choropleth map (darker = higher typical value)
- State search and selection panel (rank, vs median, range share)
- Ranked table of all states + DC
- Legend with value scale; data month and source attribution
- Links to rent-by-state and mortgage calculators

## FAQs

### What is average home cost by state based on?

FinanceFlow uses the Zillow Home Value Index (ZHVI) for mid-tier homes (single-family and condo), smoothed and seasonally adjusted, at the state level. ZHVI estimates a typical home value—not the price of a specific listing.

### How often is home cost by state updated?

Zillow Research data is synced about once a month (scheduled on the 8th). The page shows the data month used for the current figures.

### Is ZHVI the same as median sale price?

Not exactly. ZHVI is a repeat-sales style index of typical values across the housing stock. Median sale price only reflects homes that sold recently and can move with mix of inventory. Both are useful; FinanceFlow uses ZHVI for consistent state comparisons.

### How should I use this with mortgage calculators?

Pick a state to see a typical value range, then run FinanceFlow’s purchase, affordability, or rent vs buy calculators with a price closer to the home you are considering—not just the state average.

### Are these results financial advice?

No. FinanceFlow is educational only. Figures are estimates for learning and comparison. They are not an appraisal, offer, or professional advice.
