Maximum car price from your budget
Reverse of the payment calculator—start with what you can pay each month.
Payment-first vs price-first
A car loan payment calculator answers “what will my payment be for this car?” This page answers “what car fits my payment?” Enter target monthly P&I (or income × a percent), rate, and term; we estimate max vehicle price after down payment, trade-in, tax, and fees.
Income guidelines and the 20/4/10 rule
Optional income mode sets payment ≈ a percent of monthly income (often ~10% for the loan payment alone). The 20/4/10 rule (about 20% down, ≤4 years, ~10% of income toward total auto costs) is a planning heuristic—not enforced here and not advice. Use 48 months and 20% down if you want to mirror that style.
Trade-in, tax, and fees still matter
The same deal stack as the payment calculator applies in reverse: financed sales tax and fees reduce how much sticker you can afford; trade equity helps; negative equity hurts. Enter your state tax percent manually.
Credit score ranges and bad-credit budgets
Pick Excellent, Good, Fair, or Poor to preset an illustrative auto note rate—the same educational bands as the car loan calculator. Higher rates shrink max price for the same monthly payment. There is no credit pull; edit the rate to match a quote. Example deep link: /car-affordability?credit=poor .
